Why the questions of Where tobacco suit settlement monies should be spent?

The tobacco companies were sued because they supposedly lied to tobacco consumers about the health risks. Why isn’t the settlement money spent treating those affected by the(lies)? Why isn’t the money spent offering current tobacco users treatments to help them quit. If I smoke and want to quit, i have to pay hundreds of dollars on nicotene patches, gum. Or laser treatments, or shots. All at my own expense. Health insurance won’t pay for any of it. Yet billions of the settlement dollars are being wasted on other less important stuff, like stupid t.v. commercials, and programs to keep six year olds from smoking. Aren’t there laws prohibiting tobacco sales to minors. Why not enforce those laws, and spend the settlement money on the victims of big tobacco’s lies?
I know this sounds like a health related question, but politicians have the money in their greedy little hands.

the money was suppose to go to health care but,big money is loose money and it gets lost easy in government hands.

its like all the people who have lost medicare and medicaid.
most american families live at or below proverty level but,they were paying the taxes on those programs that were taken from them so,in a sense they were funding their own health care.
now even though the government convinced everyone above the proverty line that these people were costing them money,everyone is still paying into it.
basically all they did was create a surplus of money that they could use for their own needs.my grandmother died two months after the cuts to programs that she paid into all her live simply because she could no longer afford the medicines.
the government was right fraud does exsist in those programs but,no where near close to the fraud that they themselves are involved in.
it’s like where i live the state government told us if we approved the lottery,the money would be used to fund education.however our system has lost money ever since the lottery passed.our schools are worse and no one will give a straight answer about what happened to all the money.
it’s like giving to the red cross or the salvation army i guess.sure they get millions but,first thing they do is set aside the wages for those in charge.it’s only after those are met,that any money goes out for the original purpose.

Tobacco Smokers: Society’s New Pariahs?

Everyday we are bombarded with hundreds of ads of one sort or another telling us all the reasons to quit smoking, but they aren’t always real specific. Some of the more well known reasons are cancer, emphysema, stroke, etc. and these seem to have little impact on smokers anymore, nor have they ever really seemed to. Fact is most smokers seem to have the attitude that everyone is going to die anyway and generally dies of something. The air is unfit to breathe due to all the smog and pollution emitted by cars, factories, trains, and loads of other things so why worry about cigarettes?

Many smokers are now finding themselves becoming pariahs in this society where once it was extremely acceptable, and even cool, to smoke tobacco. Things have certainly changed in the last particularly 10 years though. There is a movement in many parts of the world, and not just America, to ban smoking in many public places. Indeed, in America, smoking is banned in all government buildings and many restaurants now. There is a big movement by advocates to make it illegal for smokers with minor children to smoke in their car or home. When does such ideas become a violation to the rights and freedoms of individual smokers? According to many it all ready has over stepped the boundaries by those trying to push such legislation.

Understandably, non-smokers do not want to have to breathe in the noxious second hand smoke that is given off by tobacco cigarettes-but it is also not the right of the smoker to be able to smoke if he or she desires to do so? Should there be accommodations for both? The answer to that depends on who you talk to. Smokers say that they should have the option to be able to smoke in a restaurant after having a good meal. Non-smokers believe that smokers should keep it outside or not smoke at all.

In Britain smoking has been banned in pubs across the land much to the dismay of smokers and pub owners alike. Many pub owners have complained that their business has dropped exponentially since the law was enacted. Some pub owners have made it a point to allow smoking in their pubs in spite of the law–many making statements along the lines of, “It’s my bloody pub! If I wants smokers I’ll have ‘em!”

This is a controversy that is not going to go away any time soon. There are millions of smokers all over the world and at least 50 million of them are here in the US alone. They aren’t going to all quit and taking away their right to smoke would most likely cause a war. Tobacco companies aren’t going to see their businesses crash and they have their lobbyists and billions of dollars backing them to make sure they continue on as always.
Smokers will smoke and non-smokers will gripe, and the beat goes on.

because i heard that the laws are changing so that the age to buy tobacco is being raised to 18. is this so? if anything itll do good to the nations health. theres so many young people smoking now a days. sorry to sound like an old lady.

Will make no difference whether it is true or not.
It would also make no difference even if they raised the age to 21, you will still see teenagers walking down the street smoking.
The age restrictions have never stopped them before, why should it make any difference when the age limit is changed?
