What are the statistics on smoking related illness in casual smokers?
I’ve casually smoked for about 5 years. Sometimes it’s been weeks or months without having one. The worst it ever got was about 5 a day for a couple of months (I worked in retail…)
Mostly though, it probably averages out to 1 or 2 every couple of weeks.
I’m wondering what the long term effects this will have on my body. Occasionally I put them all away for a couple of months at a time to allow my body to flush out some of the gunk. This year I’ve probably bought 2 or 3 packs total, and given at least a 3rd of those away, while I’ve bummed a couple here and there.
Well, even being exposed to second-hand smoke has risks, but if it were me, I wouldn’t worry about. Do a search for “smoking risk calculator” if you want risk numbers.

Anti- Smoking Measures are not Yielding Desired Results!
Smoking has confronted tough resistance from the bans implemented to curb smoking worldwide. In many parts of the world, smoking in enclosed premises as well as out in the open is a punishable offence. Smokers have no other way but to follow these anti-smoking regulations as breaching the quit smoking rules can lead to huge penalties. However, a certain amount of irony is involved in the implementation of anti- smoking bans. Bans are not just implemented to prevent people from smoking in particular areas but they are actually aimed helping the people to give up this lethal addiction.
The government authorities have decided to implement bans on smoking when the numerous smoking related awareness programs yielded very meager results or no results at all. But due to the ban on smoking, people have stopped to smoke in open spaces and as a consequence innocent victims are saved from the passive smoking effects to a considerable extent. But alongside, the ban on smoking has failed to completely curb on the instances of smoking worldwide.
Medical science and modern technology has brought man face to face with the ill-effects of smoking. Studies conducted all over the world have disclosed horrifying smoking statistics and thus attempted to deter people from smoking across the world. But unfortunately, for being an addiction, smoking has become permanently rooted to the human society. In spite of being acquainted with the harms of smoking considerably well, man has not been able to get rid of smoking addiction.
It is agreed by smokers that smoking awareness programs do not actually spur them to give up smoking. According to them, these awareness programs lack the spirit, the gusto and the conviction essential for quit smoking. The awareness programs on smoking seem to be nothing more than a routine that exists just for the sake of existing. These results are quite disturbing and it is further more alarming that a whopping amount of money is being invested in several anti- smoking programs that have not yielded the desired smoking cessation results. Apart from this, some of the famous international organizations are doing their bit to facilitate smoking cessation by investing valuable time and human resource to achieve the purpose. It is very unfortunate that the invested time, labor and money are not yielding results and therefore are utterly wasted.
Smoking is very rampant in countries such as US and UK as well as in third world countries, namely, India, Brazil and Pakistan. Smokers in these countries have admitted that they have not found the anti-smoking programs implemented here to be very inspiring. The anti smoking measures have been reduced to nothing but a sham. They have been nothing short of foppish. But they are not meant to be this. Their objectives are quite high and noble. Interestingly, people are not ready to opt for these anti-smoking programs but are instead willing to administer anti-smoking drugs such as Pfizer chantix. In spite of Chantix being a comparatively new drug, people are confident of it and are ready to buy chantix, regardless of its high price attached to the medicine. One can also buy chantix online as the drug is easily and sometimes even cheaply available over the internet. It therefore appears that people eager to quit smoking are desirous of buying something that costs them money instead of availing the free anti-smoking measures.

Absolutely not true.
Statistically, the sooner you quit smoking, the *less* likely you are to develop bronchitis, emphysema, heart disease, stroke, cancer, or any other smoking related complications. After 15 years of being smoke free, the risk of smoking related health problems drops to only slightly higher than those who have never smoked.
