Oh Goldendoodle, where art thou?
*Goldendoodles by Goldendoodle World. Copyright protected 2010.
There you are, oh precious Goldendoodle! For a moment there, I thought you were getting lost in the sea of negative naysayers who are upset about your ever growing popularity! The desire to own such a beautiful, majestic, loving hybrid has become so strong that the Goldendoodle is knocking the purebred Golden Retriever down the popularity charts…and this is upsetting quite a few purebred fanciers.
As I have blogged since 1999, the Goldendoodle dog is not for everyone. They are not everyone’s cup of tea. But some tea lovers enjoy plain tea; some enjoy gourmet tea and some like cream and sugar. There are enough dog fanciers of all breeds for everyone to play nice in the playground of dog ownership. There is no need for all the derogatory comments regarding breeders who create the Goldendoodle, nor those who buy and adopt them. Goldendoodles require loving personalities; a bit of exercise; tons of affection and an arsenal of forethought to prevent your Goldendoodle from becoming bored and destructive; accidents; lost or stolen.
On one hand, our gorgeous shaggy and smooth coat Goldendoodles behave very much like a purebred Golden Retriever and on the other, our curly coat Goldendoodles behave more like a purebred Poodle, but sometimes in an exaggerated, undesirable manner. Goldendoodles love being a couch potatoe but at the same time, they also enjoy exploring the wide open terrain that is full of curious entertainment. The Goldendoodle dog is a very intelligent, versatile dog whose intelligence can be a double edged sword. While on the positive side, they can learn things very quickly and take to training very easily, a Goldendoodle can get itself into trouble just as fast. They can be quite stubborn and mischievous. Goldendoodles are not an independant dog at all. They love being anywhere their humans may be.
Those who already own a Goldendoodle, especially one from our Goldendoodle World, know that they have received more slobbery love from their Goldendoodle than most dogs they have ever owned. A Goldendoodle dog is all heart and they enjoy proving it! There is controversy brewing over who became the first breeder for this lovely hybrid, but what does it matter? I am very sure there were plenty of Poodle/Golden Retriever mixes long before a single person laid claim to the dog term: Goldendoodle. What matters is that since 1999, our own Goldendoodles have become a central part of many families around the world and has made a very pawsitive impact that can’t be denied. Dee Gerrish, of Goldendoodle World, offers expert advice through her many articles that are picked up by tons of websites across the internet and there are plenty of trainers, breeders and Goldendoodle owners, including Dee Gerrish, who can help you decide if the Goldendoodle dog is for you, if you are on a doodle quest.
Battle of the Genes
A Goldendoodle can be many things. They can be perfect family pets; loving companions; great outdoor pals; cozy bed fella; an energetic pet or a lazy pet. But they can be none of these things without having great genes. You want a Goldendoodle but how do you know which Goldendoodle is perfect for you?
For one thing, there are tons of erroneous information out there regarding the Goldendoodle hybrid and that is no laughing matter. Goldendoodles are not hypoallergenic. Goldendoodles do shed. But they are very low shedding, low dander dogs for the most part, regardless of their coat type. However, there are plenty of breeders out there who are not paying attention to their dogs’ gene pool and this can cause a problem for those seeking a Goldendoodle. Some breeders are creating backbred, inbred dogs not caring about the history or lineage of their breeding dogs’ pedigree. Some are creating multi-generation Goldendoodles and have never done any research whatsoever about their breeding dogs’ lineage. Genes play a key role in how your doodle behaves as well as what they turn out to be. Genes do not play a one hundred percent role because environment also plays a key role in how your doodle behaves and what its weight turns out to be. If you put a good dog in a bad situation, the good dog turns into a bad dog or becomes a dog with issues.
With a bit of research, a little preparation and the right knowledge, a Goldendoodle breeder can help you make the right choice when it comes to selecting your new family pet. Where do you look for a Goldendoodle? Well, the answer is, just about anywhere. The naysayers will have a big smoke screen posted to disrupt your ability in finding the right breeder; purebred or other dog fanatics will give you a huge schpeel as to why you shouldn’t buy instead of adopt from a rescue or shelter; Competing breeders will sway you in their own direction and away from their competition by posting “poor reviews” about their competition and people with a vindictive ulterior motive will attempt to sway you away from “targeted” breeders by posting fabricated comments, stories or reviews that are merely meant to disrupt service of the targeted breeder. People who do this have a spiteful reason that actually has nothing at all to do with helping you one way or the other. There are forums that are irresponsible, that go improperly moderated and allow this type of nonsense to occur. Forums are not a good place to make a decision as to whom you will purchase a dog from. Most often than not, forums are full of speculated rumors by naysayers who have an ulterior, vindictive motive. So you do have your work cut out for you in that department. You can find a Goldendoodle breeder through classified ads; on the internet; from veterinarians; from websites that have a classified section and from word of mouth of those who may already own one…or two…or three.
We sell many of our own Goldendoodles by word of mouth, more so than by advertising them. Many of our customers connect with us through social networking sites and of course, through snail mail and email. In New Jersey, there is an entire block of neighbors who have Goldendoodles from our Goldendoodle World. Many of our customers take their Goldendoodles out to the beach, the park or out and about with them and they let others know where they obtained their Goldendoodle. We have been around for 14 years. So we have Golden Retriever customers as well as Goldendoodle customers that are literally spread out around the world. Some of our attorney customers take their Goldendoodle dogs with them to work. Some of our clients have been featured in magazine articles with the Goldendoodles they obtained from us and one of our Goldendoodles was featured in a television commercial for a local cabinet making company. So people spread the word about our Goldendoodles many different ways. We do not have to advertise now, like we use to back when we started.
Perhaps you know someone who owns a Goldendoodle? Many people take their doodles to the park and they are all too happy to let you know about their dog. Ask them where they obtained their doodle. Prices are always going to vary and over the years, prices increase simply because of the changing economy and increased expenses breeders face. So do keep that in mind. One guy told me that he was use to paying $300- $400 for his dogs. Well, that is all fine and dandy. But that was a very long time ago and our economy was different back then. He may be able to find a Goldendoodle for that price but he may not get the same quality as he would if he paid just a bit more from a breeder who provides more for his money. The saying, a Goldendoodle is a Goldendoodle is a Goldendoodle…just isn’t true. In order to have a quality doodle dog, the breeder has to be careful about the way they are creating their dogs and like I said, be diligent about researching their breeding dogs’ pedigree and know what the heck it is they are doing. I personally spent 2 years researching the pedigrees of my breeding dogs. It has taken me since 1999 to be able to say that, yes indeed, I do consider myself a Goldendoodle expert. I know this dog front, back and side ways. I have photographed, documented and researched for so long that I should know what the heck it is I am talking about. If you do not know anyone at all who owns a Goldendoodle, you can contact some kennel clubs like Universal Kennel International at http://www.universalkennel.com since they were the first kennel clulb to register the Goldendoodle hybrid, in the United States. Dee Gerrish was their first breeder who registered the Goldendoodle with this kennel club and yes, all of Dee’s Goldendoodles have an AKC pedigree that dates back to the early 1930s.
UKCI has copies of the pedigrees that originally came from the American Kennel Club. AKC has just now begun to allow mixed breed dogs to compete along side the purebred dog in some competition shows and this of course, has caused an uproar with purebred dog fanciers. In its 125 years of being a kennel club, purebred dog fanciers are having split headaches over AKC’s decision of now allowing Goldendoodles and Labradoodles to become registered with their kennel club and now competing in some competitions. I’ve already written an article about why that is. AKC laughs itself all the way to the bank. Any time they see a dog become very popular, they jump on the bandwagon. They’ve done this for many, many years. It was of no surprise to me when I heard this. Back in 1999 when I first began my Goldendoodle breeding program, I wrote about my moving all of my purebred dogs to UKCI (Universal Kennel Club) because of the fact AKC allowed a purebred dog breeder to register a litter of Toy Poodles knowing my Toy Poodle sire was the father of the litter she registered. However, she claimed her Toy Poodle male was the sire and I challenged AKC to force the breeder to provide DNA to prove that my Toy Poodle was not the sire. Their response to me was that they were nothing more than a canine registrant service and did not get involved with breeder disputes. So, let me point this out. AKC claims they are IT as far as kennel clubs are concerned and yet, in 1999, a Toy Poodle breeder registered a litter of Toy Poodles with fake AKC documents and now that entire litter has spread further FAKE AKC pedigree information!!! People who bought the puppies have false AKC documents. When AKC refused to assist me with that litter and they were well aware that the woman had filed a fake AKC litter registration for that litter…knowing the litter belonged to my Toy Poodle sire’s pedigree….that was it for me and AKC. I immediately contacted UKCI (Universal Kennel Club) and I transferred all of the copies of my dogs’ AKC pedigree documents to them and re-registered all of my dogs with UKCI. I let AKC know that I withdrew from them as a member and was severing ties with their kennel club because I could no longer trust them. I especially did not want to be involved with a kennel club who would knowingly allow a breeder to file falsified pedigree/litter registration documents and then not even want to assist a kennel club member with something this important. As far as I was concerned, I was done with trusting AKC.
So I will tell anyone to be careful when it comes to the American Kennel Club. Their club is about money and that is all. Kennel clubs are suppose to take care of their members and help breeders who are affiliated with them, when needed. How can AKC even claim they are professional if they allow breeders to register dogs with false pedigrees? I think now they have changed their policy and require DNA…but I don’t know. All of my dogs are now UKCI registered because Universal Kennel Club takes care of me as a member and they have always been there if and when I needed their assistance.
Some people take only price into consideration when seeking a Goldendoodle and they really shouldn’t do that. Some believe that if they buy a Goldendoodle from a breeder who has performed every test known to dog that this shows the breeder as a “top quality” breeder, when in fact, it does not. It is a known fact that even vets who turned out to become breeders for the Goldendoodle have produced dysplastic dogs and they have all of the equipment right at their hands to perform whatever tests they want…all for free! Like human beings, dogs can contract diseases that are debilitating and there was no way to know in advance that this would happen. A breeder can test their breeding dogs all day long and night. Tests are only valid for the dog who was tested. They do not quarantee whatsoever that offspring are free and clear from any genetic issue that could come along. What I believe is of better help is to know more about the pedigree than the breeding dog itself. It is quite noble of a breeder to not want to have puppies born who could turn out to have a genetic health issues sometime down the road as it ages, but it’s just not possible to do with one hundred percent certainly. We, as human beings, can not do it for ourselves. Why do we want it so badly for our dogs? I further find it very interesting when people call me and ask me if I did this or that test for my breeding dogs and here they are as parents and never took into consideration one time about having themselves tested prior to having children. Aren’t children more important than dogs? Don’t children live longer? I’ve never quite understood the hypocrisy. Kids certainly cost entirely more than dogs, to raise. I would think that if worrying about genetic diseases was a priority for me, I would pay to have myself and my spouse tested before becoming pregnant before I’d worry about whether a breeder tested the parents of a puppy I was considering buying. Having children that might never make it as an adult due to debilitating genetic health problems is far more important. I also had written an article discussing this very issue, so I am not going to harp on this subject here.
Regarding prices, they are going to vary and price alone should not be the priority when looking for a Goldendoodle. Some breeders may sell their pups for $300- $400 a piece. But what can they offer for such a low price? What quality comes along with the doodle? The reasonable price for a Goldendoodle of quality is around $1500- $3000. It requires years of research; years of knowledge; There are expenses involved to care for the mother dog and her puppies; there are vet costs. Breeding is not a poor man’s hobby. It is a very expensive hobby that comes with alot of costs involved that many people never take into consideration. By the time a breeder adds in all the necessary expenses just to provide a buyer one single puppy, the breeder rarely makes any money out of the selling price. They might get a bit of it to help pay for what they have already spent. Researching and ordering pedigrees can be quite expensive as well. So there are many things to take into consideration before you narrow down your choice. A good breeder will help you decide which Goldendoodle is best for you and your family. If a breeder can not answer the questions that you have (reasonable questions, that is) then you should find yourself another breeder. I can’t tell you how many telephone calls I personally receive from people who have purchased a Goldendoodle from another breeder, asking me questions that their breeder should have been able to answer, but could not. It leaves me wonderng why the person bought a dog from a breeder who could not answer even the most basic of doodle questions. I don’t have all the answers nor does any breeder. But a Goldendoodle breeder should be able to answer most basic questions and they should be able to tell you what you can expect from the coat type that you purchase…size…that sort of thing.
Home sweet home
Once you have purchased your Goldendoodle and taken him or her home, you have a big job ahead of you. There are many things you need to do and the first thing is housebreaking and teaching your doodle some manners. You will also need supplies and toys. It is also important to know that most deep-chested breeds are more susceptible of developing bloat, which is serious and can be deadly. Bloat is a gastric disorder that can happen suddenly and without warning. Goldendoodles can sometimes have this happen completely out of the blue because the Golden Retriever is considered to be a deep-chested breed. Bloat happens to mostly large dogs. It isn’t that common with a Goldendoodle thus far, but it can happen. Some believe that bloat runs in families and that it may be genetic. But that is really up for debate. We recommend feeding smaller meals three times a day rather than one large meal, one time a day since this can help minimize the speed at which your doodle may eat. It is believed that a dog eating rapidly and getting air inside the stomach along with the food can cause Bloat to happen. I have never personally experienced bloat with any dog I’ve ever owned, so I can not share the experience or how or why it happens. I have only read about it or heard about it from other dog owners of different breeds.
According to officials at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana they have said to wait an hour after meals before offering water or allowing your dog to romp around to exercise. They have come up with a technique through laparscopic-assisted gastroplexy that supposedly helps prevent bloat. What are symptoms?
*Discomfort
*Retching
*Pacing
*Intense salivation
Of course the above symptoms can be caused by other things….but its important that if you notice these symptoms, to get your doodle to a vet right away. Bloating can kill your Goldendoodle quickly.
Goldendoodle Support
Sometimes people want a Goldendoodle to pay tribute to their Golden Retriever or Wheaten Terrier who may have passed away. We tell everyone who desires to replace a pet who has died, to remember that their beloved pet can never be replaced. However, a Goldendoodle can bring much joy back into their lives. Goldendoodles are quite comical dogs that can put a smile on your face very easily. That is, if you do not mind your doodle being under your feet every time you turn around. The power of a Goldendoodle to fill your heart with bursting pride and joy is simply amazing.
You, of course, can never forget a pet you have loved and lost, but you don’t have to spend any more time missing them and wishing for another great companion. Your pet who passed away will always have a special place in your heart. A Goldendoodle can create a new space and bring renewed joy back into your life. They know how to brighten up your day and they don’t mind proving they have this capacity for overwhelming happiness.

Promised Land [CD-ROM] Queensryche’s follow-up to the double-platinum Empire is something of an acquired taste, but it’s well worth the effort. There’s considerable variety here; the heavy progressive-rock of “I Am I” and the ballad “Bridge” were hit singles, but there’s also the funk-inflected “Disconnected”, the edgy, spooky “Lady Jane”, and the piano-and-vocals “Someone Else?”.
