Why is marijuana illegal?
From several reliable sources, I have learned that while there are millions of deaths related to alcohol and tobacco, there are almost no death related to marijuana.
I also learned that it is basically impossible to overdose on marijuana by eating or smoking it.
I learned that marijuana is much less addictive than alcohol and tobacco.
I learned that the average marijuana smoker is healthier than the average cigarette smoker.
I learned that a LOT of people in the US use marijuana, and if it were legal and taxed the government would be making a lot of money. The government would also save a lot of money from marijuana related arrest and imprisonments.
I have to be missing something! Based on the research I did it makes perfect logical sense to make marijuana legal but it still is not.
To the first person, where do you get your logic?
You are right, why is it illegal? Well, there isn’t a logical explanation. Back when it was made illegal, in 1937, people were beginning to smoke it a lot. Why? Because they had just banned alcohol until 1933, and people were angry, looking for something else to do with their time. So since people began using this “drug” a lot, they thought they were abusing it and made it illegal. If you read up on it, it was literally just made illegal-not given any trials or anything.
Marijuana has never caused a death by itself. It IS impossible to overdose on in any way that it is entered into the body. If you were smoking it, you would have to smoke about 1/3 of your body weight in POUNDS (which is a ridiculous amount) and do this in 15 minutes. You would fall asleep before you were able to smoke this much, making overdose impossible. You also wouldn’t be able to ingest that much food because once again, there would have to be a ridiculous amount of marijuana and you would have to eat like crazy-even the world’s biggest eaters or whatever they are couldn’t achieve this.
Marijuana is also not really addictive. I used to smoke every day and then stopped for awhile (no real reason) and it’s not like I was sitting in a corner itching myself. You don’t feel any different whether you smoke it regularly or not. It’s a recreational thing, for fun, not addictive unless you make it that way. When you smoke (regardless of what people think who HAVEN’T smoked), you are still able to think pretty clearly, drive, eat, work-out, do all the normal things, while just feeling in a more relaxed state. It is up to the person smoking to decide if they are going to be “addicted” or not, that would mean they would use it almost every second of the day and it would control their life. You can still use it as much as you want, as long as you are able to act like a normal human and it doesn’t control your life.
When you smoke out of a pipe, bong, chillum, etc., it CAN still be unhealthy, but no where near as bad as smoking cigarettes. The funny thing is, vaporizers are widely available, meaning you inhale vapor and NOT smoke into your lungs, meaning it’s perfectly fine for you. You can also eat “special brownies” or something and it would still be perfectly healthy.
It is the third most widely used “drug,” and yes, the government still makes it illegal for whatever their reason is. It has no reason to be illegal anymore and I have done lots of research on it. Marijuana can actually help cure cancer and make thousands of jobs-if it were legalized, we would get out of this recession. There are so many things about marijuana that would benefit our society but most people are really uneducated about them, just going by what they learn in school-marijuana is bad and so is heroin. You never REALLY learn why it’s bad, they just tell you it’s addictive. It’s not.
There’s also some confusion about marijuana being the “gateway drug.” This is totally ridiculous and I’ll give you a few reasons.
1. 90% of people who used cocaine also smoked marijuana before-but EVERYONE who had smoked marijuana had once drank milk. Milk is the real gateway drug!!!!! (haha sorry I just find that funny.)
2. When you’re in health class, you’re learning that marijuana is terrible and you’re learning that heroin is terrible-they’re all the same. But then a few years later you smoke marijuana and you realize there’s nothing wrong with it, so you think there’s nothing wrong with heroin-you get the point?
3. Since marijuana is illegal, it’s sold by drug dealers. Most drug dealers don’t make as much off of weed as they do coke and stuff. Therefore, you might be persuaded into doing that stuff or tempted since you would be around it.
4. Sort of the same reason, just being around it-if it were legalized, the whole “gateway drug” thing would be ridiculous. Also, the people that try that stuff are idiots-you know there’s something wrong with that stuff. I’ve never wanted to do hard drugs and smoking marijuana has actually made me MORE aware of how bad those are and has actually made me stay away from them even more, if that were possible.
You were right to question the legal status, as there is no reason for it to be that way. Everyone thinks marijuana is a bad drug, addictive, unhealthy, causes deaths, whatever-I ask you people, have you ever smoked it? If so, you wouldn’t even think those things. Have you researched it? Obviously not.
Another thing is I think it would make society happier. Look at the way drunks act-so angry and violent. Marijuana makes you very calm and chill and I’ve NEVER seen anyone that was high get into a fight or be mad. It also helps you appreciate things more.
