Do insurance companies have cheaper rates if you have a mitigated basement?
Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer (behind smoking). There are 22,000 yearly deaths because of lung cancer every year caused by radon. If you mitigate then your radon level is reduced significantly and your chances of lung cancer because of radon are almost zero. I was thinking that if you get cheaper rates if you do not smoke, then why not get cheaper rates for having your basement mitigated.
No. Homeowners insurance doesn’t cover health issues for residents, OR radon issues.
And you don’t get a cheaper rate on your homeowners for being a nonsmoker, either – turns out even smokers will lie about it, to save $20 on their insurance. That discount went out, maybe 30 years ago.
Turns out, the #1 cause of housefires, is unattended candles. The #2 cause is electrical issues, and #3 is lightening.

Few habits are as dangerous to your health as smoking. Nicotine from cigarettes harms smokers in many insidious ways. Smoking increases cardiovascular health risks. It causes cancer.
After smoking for many years, you finally made the decision to quit. Breaking the habit was very difficult. But you stuck to your guns and now you are smoke free. But then, something happened. You started to gain weight. Now you find yourself overweight and you don’t like it.
Why did you gain weight after you quit smoking?
Often an ex-smoker finds that his or her appetite increases. Nicotine is no longer suppressing the appetite.
Your heart rate and metabolism slow down and you burn fewer calories. Your taste buds are no longer dulled by nicotine. Food tastes and smells better. The pleasure of eating replaces, for some ex-smokers, the pleasure from smoking. The combination of eating more and metabolizing slower means, guess what? You put on fat and gained weight.

Your community library probably has several shelves of books on how to lose weight. There are weight loss programs that tell you to buy their pre-prepared food and follow their guidelines. You could spend a lot of money and waste a lot of time on these programs. You’re confused.

What is the success rate of having gastric by-pass surgery without complications?
I’m 65 years old and have had a double by-pass heart surgery in 2002 . My height is 4′ 11 1/2 inches and at this time my weight has climbed to from 182 to 212 lbs in the last 2 years. In 1999 I quit smoking at that time my weight was 135lbs. Over the next 3 years I gained 70 lbs bringing me up to 223 lbs but lost 40 of it, bringing me down to 182lbs before having back surgery in 2003 , so I’m thinking of having this surgery done, If my doctor will okay it, but I’ve heard there can also be complications from this surgery. Also this weight gain is causing me problems with my back surgery. I can walk with and without a walker but, not a long distance. I use a motorized wheelchair when going to the store or ect.
I think this would be a risky procedure for you, with your current health problems. Also, I know a couple of women who have had the surgery, lost a lot of weight initially, and then very slowly regained it. Perhaps you should see a dietician and a fitness expert that can show you how to achieve some valuable exercise within your limitations. Good luck.
