The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Tuesday shows that 30% of the nation’s voters Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as President. Forty-one percent (41%) Strongly Disapprove giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of -11 (see trends).

Mirror Dinghy Plans
I’ve a ambition, to construct my very own mirror dinghy. A set of mirror dinghy plans would be perfect. Nothing really complex, a little ordinary one sheet skiff, or perhaps it is a canoe. In my dream, the previous few centuries have slipped away, and it’s a beautiful early summer day somewhere within the North-East of what has become called The brand new World, perhaps on St. Lawrence river, or the Great Lakes, or among the many numerous waterways that criss-cross the Canadian Shield.
My mirror dinghy plans are sketched on the few sheets of worn and creased foolscap, or perhaps parchment. The craft of stitch and glue boat building, learned from the native Algonquins and employed by them to build their great war canoes, I now put to some more serene use. The stitching cures within the strong summer sun. It is a sturdy boat, and definitely will take me long and far.
Early in the day I slip away from this modest settlement, gliding soundlessly through the stillness, hearing the swish of river reeds about the sides of my boat, the soft splash of my oars in the water. Casting a line within the waterto catch my an evening meal. During the night time, the smell of smoke from my campfire and the sound of crickets chirping, and the following morning, onwards all over again.
This is actually the world the proud and independent fur traders made their own. Men with a flavor for adventure with a calling towards the wild locations, these people bartered with all the native peoples for the lavish bounty within the abundant surreal nature, going back to settlement or even trading outposts for further trade products, provisions, powder and ball to the musket. And after that returning to the lake.
Within my dream, that is my own world. I paddle by way of a huge, primeval wilderness, across the uncounted and uncountable rivers. By gorges coupled with rapids, past sheer cliffs plus islands choked with fir and even spruce, and stair-like waterfalls, dipping my blade inside mirror-flat lakes as a call from the loons echoes while in the far distance.
It’s my dream, anyway. How realistic do you find it? Not very, I suppose. For starters, I cannot voyage back in time more than 200 years. For another (and also knowing something about boat building, then you noticed this), the art of stitch and glue boat building is very modern development, not the method learned from the Algonquins, not something they had in the time of Radisson and Groseilliers and also the voyageurs . So please forgive my little anachronism. Remember, it’s simply a dream.
And in ways, that makes my dream very likely to come true. Building your own private boat is much, much simpler today than it has ever been previously. No, you cannot get rich from the fur trade, but those primeval forests criss-crossed and dotted with a thousand rivers and lakes are nevertheless out there. It is possible to still recapture that feeling, that sense of adventure. All that’s required to get started is a boat…
