Why Is It That People Assume That Priests Do Not Do Things Like Smoke, Drink, and Watch R-rated Movies?

I’m being serious… there is a priest in his 30s who is new at our Church.

Parishoners are shocked to see him smoking a cigarette outside after Mass and he talks to the kids (mainly teens) on his favorite action and horror films.

I don’t get why this is so shocking to some people. Just because he’s a priest means he can’t do these things?

Many people have expectations as to how a priest should act. Most of those are due to a lack of interaction with priests outside of the church pulpit.

ADD: The churches, especially the Catholic church, have often set unrealistic goals for their priests then hidden the fact that the priests have trouble reaching these goals (even hidden it from other priests).
Originally, Catholic priests were EXPECTED to have families (like Rabbis do) but over time for political and financial reason Catholic priests were encouraged to to be unmarried or at least have no children (that way when the priest died his property would belong to the church).
For a long time, priest WERE allowed to have sex as long as they had no children!

The Eastern church allows their priests to marry, and recently when the Catholic church and the Eastern church tried to reconcile, it was decided that Eastern church priests could be married, but Catholic priests still could NOT. Many of their best priests quit over this issue.

Understandably, we have to cut back during these bleak times, but we still need some entertainment or we will all go mad! would you attend a christian college?

my friend goes to a christian college. IDK how he hasn’t gotten expelled. you’re not allowed to drink, smoke, have sex, and watch R-rated movies. Ok… I can understand not having sex. I sorta understand not drinking/smoking. And I completely understand not watching R-rated movies in the lobby. But come on? Is anyone actually gonna punish him for watching Zombieland in theaters? Personally, I’m 22 going on 23. If i want a beer I’m gonna have a beer. If I want to watch zombieland or saw 6 i’m gonna watch it and no one can stop me. Would you ever attend a christian college?

I went to a Christian college and it wasn’t a party school at all. It was still a good school (some of my classmates got free rides to Harvard Medical afterward). No drinking or smoking, separate dorms, and chapel a couple of days a week. But most of the guidelines were commonsense like you said (like no watching R-rated movies in the lobby). But they don’t micromanage your life where went to school (Eastern Nazarene College). They’re just smart — good values and the right priorities, but not total control freaks about it. P.S. I saw Zombieland recently and loved it. Your friend must go to a Fundamentalist school like Liberty University or something.
