What causes heart disease?

I know the risk factors; genetic; high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, poor diet/overweight, lack of exercise. I am from a family of 7 children; 3 of my brothers developed diabetes/heart disease aged 40-45; 3 of my grandparents lived into late 80′s and 90′s disease free. My parents and my other grandparent all died young from heart disease – they all smoked.

I – in common with all my siblings have high LDL cholerserol. I have normal blood pressure, a reasonable diet, am of normal weight. I gave up cigarettes 20 years ago. However, I am being investigated for heart disease now due to chest pain.

If I am genetically disposed, how much can I influence the outcome by not smoking, eating healthily and exercising. I already walk at least 5 miles per day. If I can only have minimal influence, then I wish the research would tell me that and stop wasting my time!

I would like specific statistics only…….i don’t believe the PR anymore!

Genetics can play a huge role in how your body handles/utilizes cholesterol. You are doing all the right things which will help reduce your risk factors. There is a new medication on the market for cholesterol which helps how your body deals with the cholesterol (it advertises pictures of relatives which contribute to the risk for heart disease). There are no statistics you can use because it depends on what your numbers are which your doctor then determines how much of a risk factor you have. You are not wasting your time by doing everything you possibly can to live a long, healthy life. Having a cardiologist that knows your history is also beneficial. If you stopped doing what you are currently doing, you would greatly increase your risk factors for early heart disease and I don’t believe you want to go down that road so keep up the good work.

Causes of Heart Attacks - A new study on 18,000 middle aged men in the United Kingdom has revealed new statistics on the effects of smoking. The study looked at the affects of smoking on people that had any of these three symptoms. They chose people for the study who had either high cholesterol, high blood pressure or were deemed to be over-weight. They then compared results between smokers and non-smokers.

The study revealed some startling statistics. They found that the middle aged smokers who had either high cholesterol or high blood pressure lived ten years less than their counterparts who had normal levels of both cholesterol and blood pressure levels and who did not smoke. More worryingly for most people, those smokers who were also over-weight could expect to knock as much as fifteen years off their life expectancy through smoking.

Smoking whilst being over-weight with high levels of cholesterol and high blood pressure was one of the major causes of heart attacks and was their biggest risk factor – alongside other blood circulation, strokes and heart diseases.

It is the nicotine in cigarettes and tobacco that people get addicted to, milligram for milligram it is more addictive than even cocaine or heroin. It takes just seven seconds from the time smoke is inhaled for the nicotine to reach the brain.

It is not the Nicotine itself that is dangerous to our health. Nicotine is an appetite suppressant and also a natural stimulant. The problem is that cigarettes can contain up to 4,000 other chemicals and it is these chemicals that in effect poison the body and cause cancer and a whole list of cardiovascular problems.

Smoking in public places is now banned in several countries including the United Kingdom and some states in America. Second-hand smoke is also dangerous, it is not only the smoker who is at risk from the smoke that is produced by burning cigarettes, and is then exhaled by smokers. Second-hand smoke remains in a room for up to 120 minutes afterwards even though you may not even be able to smell or see it in the air. Second-hand smoke can increase even a non smokers risk of lung cancer by 25%, especially in asthma sufferers.

The increased risk to non-smokers of getting heart and circulation problems make it one of the major Causes of Heart Attacks.

Statistics!?

Explain whether an experiment or an observational study would be more appropriate to investigate the following:

a. Whether or not smoking has an effect on coronary heart disease.

b. Whether or not higher SAT scores tend to be positively associated with higher college GPA’s.

c. Whether or not a special coupon attached to the outside of a catalog makes recipients more likely to order products from a mail-order company.

a) observation. it would be unethical to run and experiment to test as you would have to ask non-smokers to start smoking to see if they develop heart disease

b) observation, you can’t force students to take the SAT or go to college. Simply look at the data that is already available.

c) experiment. you can control this. send the catalog with coupons to some customers and the same catalog to other customers without the coupon and see if either group is more likely to buy. there are some issue with the experiment design, but they can be overcome.
