Money is one of the things which is always on our minds. This is even more noticeable now since most of the world is in a recession people losing investments and in many cases jobs.
If you like many others looking for ways to cut expenses and save extra money. With a bit of research you can find better deals on your insurances, phone calls and other every day expenses. By doing so you can easily save a decent amount of money but there are also a number of other steps you can take.
If you take a closer look into your life you most probably will find lots of different ways to save money. As a smoker, you might be surprised but you literally have a gold mine in your life. Smoking is costing a small fortune. If you can quit the amount of money you will be able to save will amaze you if not shock you. But the best thing about it is that it can act as an inspiration for you to give up smoking.
The cost of smoking is much more than the cost of cigarettes.
You probably, like many other smokers, never took the time to sit down and figure out how much smoking actually costing you. Guess what you in for a shock because the cost of smoking is much more than just cigarettes. Let’s consider the following example.
Lets for the sake of this example you pay five dollars for pack of cigarettes. I know it may be on a low side for some people and on the high for others but that is the number I will use for this example and you can always make your own calculations with more accurate figures. Lets also for the ease of this example assume that you smoke a pack a day. So for the year it works out to be 365 x 5 = 1825 not too much over the year but still not a small amount.
Let’s now have a deeper look into the associated costs. You have to buy your cigarettes from somewhere so sometimes you will have to make a trip to the store just to get cigarettes so there is suddenly an add on of gas money on top of the price of cigarettes. Let’s take $1 as a cost for fuel and car usage and let’s say you have to spend it on every third pack so let’s see how much extra we will have to pay 365 / 3 x 1 = 122. That is 122 dollars just to get cigarettes. And our new running total is 1825 + 122 = 1947
As a smoker your insurance costs are higher. In some cases your insurance may be subsidised by your employer but it still costing you as higher insurance rate mean employer is probably paying you less then he would if insurance rate was lower. There is also a new trend emerging of the employers passing this higher rate on to smoking employs. Statistics shows that as a smoker you are paying on average about 15% to 20% more for your health insurance then non-smoker. Let’s say you paying 300 per month for your health insurance. If we use the lower percentage 15% difference between smokers and non-smokers so if you were a non-smoker you would be paying 255 a month so over a course of a year the difference becomes 45 x 12 = 540. And that’s just on health insurance if we were to take life insurance into consideration as well smokers normally pay 100% more in insurance so if you are paying 500 a year for life insurance if you were a non-smoker you would be paying 250. So here is another $250 saving you can make. Let’s just sum up our running total so far 1947 + 540 + 250 = 2737.
But guess what that’s still not all, there are more to come.
You may not be aware of this but there a number of other less tangible costs associated with smoking. One of those costs is your assets such as car, inside of your house etc. When in a future you will try to sell your car or a hose you can be sure to get less than if you did not smoke inside them. Some people may even be turned off from buying them just because previous owners smoked inside them. Smoke tends to stick to the inside of the car and also to the furniture and walls inside the house. These costs are much harder to calculate but you still should be aware that they do exists.
Another intangible cost associated with smoking is an impaired career development. A number of companies recently stopped hiring smokers as it adds more costs to the company in a long run. Also smokers tend to take more breaks then non smokers in turn reducing the productivity.
Whatever the official police of the company in regards to non smokers you can be quite sure that in many circumstances a non smoker will have a better chance of getting the job than a smoker providing everything else is the same.
So is smoking affecting your career advancement and higher pay? The exact financial lose due to this is hard to calculate but as you can see if you were to examine your career you may find that potentially you could of been earning more than you are right now. Also due to this your security payments will be lower when you retire.
But that’s not all there are still other costs associated with smoking and this can include more expenses on dental care, skin care. Also the cleaning costs go up for car, furniture clothing etc. Other costs which are not monetary are reduced number of friends or dating partners which can affect your self esteem.
So let’s look at potential costs and you can calculate your own.
So thinking about everything above your total cost of smoking potentially can run into tens of thousands of dollars a year without you actually realizing it and that’s allot of money. Just think of what could you do with an extra ten thousand dollars. And there are other things like interest if you where to put those money in a term deposit savings account you would of earned interest of about a thousand dollars or so a year.
Now you may just find a motivation to quit smoking.
