Smoking cost the nation about $92 billion in the form of lost productivity in 1997-2001, up about $10 billion from the annual mortality related productivity losses for the years 1995-1999, according to new data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The new lost productivity estimate when combined with smoking-related health-care costs, which was reported at $75.5 billion in 1998, exceeds $167 billion per year in the United States.
The report also finds that during 1997-2001 an estimated 438,000 premature deaths occur each year as a result of smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke. In comparison, approximately 440,000 smoking-related deaths were estimated to have occurred annually from 1995-1999.

The most talked about drug in tobacco is nicotine. Nicotine is vasoconstrictor and a nerve toxin, it has been classified as a class I insecticide. Other poisons include: Arsenic, Cyanide, Formaldehyde (used to embalm bodies), Ammonia Bromide (a toilet cleaner )- Ref. 1. Each year, because of exposure to environmental tobacco smoke, an estimated 3,000 nonsmoking Americans die of lung cancer, and 300,000 children suffer from lower respiratory tract infections.

First of all, let me say that I am not a smoker, hate cigarette smoke, and wish that there were no cigarettes at all.
I’m 15 years old, and next Tuesday in my debate class I need to argue in favor of smoker’s rights. Unfortunately, there are very few articles I can find that discuss statistics that could help me, and what is out there is quite nebulous.
So, if anyone could give me a hand I’d really appreciate it.
There are two things I’m mainly searching for:
1) How many deaths occur every year from non-constant exposure to second-hand smoke?
2) If a smoker is non-insured and cannot afford treatment for smoking-related illnesses, what can he/she do? Would a hospital/ER treat him?

ok, so irregardles to how many deaths occur from non-consistant second hand smoke, the fact remains that it does cause irreversible (this is proven) damgage to the cilia and alveoli. Smokers should not not be able to subject people to this. its assauling the lungs of others.
Secondly, In the hospital if a person comes in without health insurance IT IS AGAINST THE LAW FOR THE STAFF TO REFUSE TREATMENT ON THIS BASIS.
