Does anyone know any POSSIBLE long term effects of “spice” Damiana?
There is this smoke-able LEGAL herb called Damiana. It is known on the street as “spice” or “spark”. It gives you similar effects of a marijuana high. This is HUGE in Utah right now, and I don’t know if it is in other states. However, I don’t know if there is any known long term effects. I know smoking in general is not GOOD for you, but is this not BAD for me either?
Wow! Utah too!? Well that’s interesting. Spice is huge in the US right now. I didn’t find out about it until fall 2008 when I came across it in Georgia. The first was called spike99 but there are so many different brands and flavors now that they are impossible to count. I’m from Utah as well (Provo area) and when I left in June of 2008 I had never heard of spice, spark, or anything else remotely close. I live in north Carolina now and I know of at least 30 different kinds of spice. Ranging in price from 20-30 $ a gram. There is not very much info out there about spice or the chemical make up of it. Smokers have tried recreating the spice smoking blends using the herbal ingredients listed on the package but have not aqquired the desired results. These indevidual herbs do not pose any particular health threat that I know of. However I have heard many rumors ( there are numerous online forums discussing this very topic) that the key is in the synthetic cannabinoids that are mixed into the blend. JWH-018 is one possibility that seems to recur most frequently. Though I have not seen any proof on the matter. Interestingly enough the US military recently outlawed the use of spice smoking blends by DOD service members (effective dec 4, 2009) and the punishments for violation have been very steep so far. I cannot verify if this is a worldwide thing or local to fort bragg, but as of when I’m posting this the military does NOT have a reliable way to test for spice. This indicates that even the Department of defense is unsure of the chemical makeup of the blends. (another possibility is that it’s just simply to expensive to enact the military wide “spice specific drug testing” that would be needed) I’ve Been looking for more info on spice as well, so if anyone knows anything it would be greatly appreciated. I’ll post again if I learn anything new. The bottom line is that spice simply hasn’t been around long enough to verify any long term health effects. At least to my knowledge. Considering your comment on it’s popularity in Utah now (and the fact that I grew up in Utah and as of June 2008 I hadn’t heard of it) I’d say it must be quite new indeed.
