Side effects from smoking cessation? I am 18 days smoke free…thank you Chantix!?
This is my first successful quit without cheating. Had to cut the chantix dosage in half, due to anger, anxiety, restlessness, etc. But, once the dose was reduced to .5 x 2/day, I’ve done much better. However, I slept between 10-12 hours a day for the first 2 weeks. Now into the third week, I have insomnia. Also, lots of stomach upset, horrible gas, either constipation for days or bouts of diarhea. My tongue is sore, my breath is horrid, and I feel generally pretty crappy.
So, I know that I’ve abused my body for more years than I’d like to admit by smoking a pack a day and my body is trying to recover. I’m drinking tons of water-at least 50 oz/day, eating lots of fresh fruit, etc. I don’t want to stop the chantix yet….even though the bad cravings are gone. But, how long will all of this last? I can’t focus on anything and it’s affecting my work!
those desires to smoke are called cravings.. people in support groups have some tools to deal with them.. one of my favorites is known as the 5d’s
Distract (do something else) for instance its hard to smoke doing dishes
Delay (i don’t need one right now).. continued delays = a quit!!
Discuss you did that by asking the question, people in support groups do it in meetings or e-mails
Drink Water, it helps reduce cravings, and flushes toxins
Deep breathe, most smokers only breathe deeply when inhaling!!
the good news is that i now have been quit for over 5 years.. i quit trying to quit alone, and joined a support group.. i attend nicotine anonymous meetings both locally and on line.. on line voice meetings are he as close as your computer, and you can attend while still smoking, before actually attempting a quit.. however you decide to quit good luck, there is simply no wrong way to quit!!

What is the neurological response during the first week after smoking the “last” cigarette?
Hey… I insist on quitting without any aids. Pills, patches, gum, whatever.. seems pointless to me… kind of like delaying the inevitable.
I find it much easier to accomplish things when I understand them fully. I would like to know what’s going on in my brain when I am nicotine free for extended periods of time. I know the feelings I get but I don’t understand what they are and why they are coming.
Can anyone point me to a website or explanation of the neurological response during the first week after cessation? I could not find any website with this particular information. Also, how long does it take for the physical side effects to subside?
I’m going to do this, just need some info to guide myself when in doubt.

I most certainly feel your pain as I have recently decided to quit as well. I do know that studies have proven that a higher percentage of heroin addicts are able to kick their habit than are smokers. Don’t feel weak or inadequate if you find you have to have help to quit. I recently got a prescription for “Chantix” which blocks the nicotine receptors in the brain, and it does indeed help. It stops the physical craving while I continue to work on the psychological addiction. I was plesantly surprised. I’m also determined to quit, but I’ll accept anything to help me accomplish it.
