Well, as you now probably know, it already is. in my opinion, it’s a really good idea. i mean, i’m not completely against smoking, seeing as i have a couple cigarettes here and there, but it’s only fair for those that don’t like smoking not to be around it

As of July the 1st 2007 the government’s controversial prohibition of all smoking in an enclosed public place in England came into effect after years of debate and opposition. The smoking ban was initially proposed on the 16th of November 2004 and would gradually be phased in with smoking in government buildings banned in 2006, enclosed public places by 2007 and restaurants, pubs and clubs by 2008. On October 26th 2005 the government announced that it would continue with these plans.
All workplaces, including restaurants and pubs selling food, will have to have a ban in place by summer 2007. On February 14th 2006 the House of Commons first voted on the amendment to the original compromise plan, to extend the ban to all enclosed public places except private members’ clubs. This amendment was carried with a large majority.
The government hopes the ban, will help smokers to quit as well as protect people from the dangers of passive smoking and discourage children from taking up the habit. It was estimated that a complete smoking ban might reduce smoking rates by nearly 2%, taking the percentage of smokers from 24% now, down to 22%. This would mean roughly 600,000 fewer smokers in the long term. However the primary aim of the legislation is to reduce the risk from exposure to second-hand smoke. Doctors estimate second-hand smoke kills more than 600 people a year. It is estimated about 10 million adults in the UK smoke.
Now all restaurants, clubs, pubs and even railway platforms can enjoy a smoke free atmosphere. But is ‘enjoy’ really the right phrase to use? A recent poll taken by Ciao Surveys shows that 61% of smokers and 24.2% of non smokers now smell other strong odours in pubs and clubs such as sweat and stale beer. Of course there are health benefits as the risk of passive or second hand smoke is reduced and the thought of having to stand outside in the cold on a night out is putting people off smoking all together with an estimated half of all smokers’ surveyed smoking less since the ban.
Although those desperate for a cigarette that go outside to smoke have had a new word accepted in the dictionary for their efforts, ‘Smirting’. A portmanteau of the words smoking and flirting, it describes the social pastime of flirting outside places where smoking is forbidden. With so many people now huddled together outside the club smirting, have the government really achieved one of their aims of reducing the number of smokers in this country? I have personally witnessed non-smokers joining their smoker friends on the pavement outside for fear of ‘missing out’ on a conversation or joke or even the chance to talk to an attractive girl or guy. Cigarette sales did fall by almost 7% in July but it was only a 2% fall for the whole year many believe that bad weather was to blame as last years summer was particularly poor. These figures are a decline there’s no denying it but is it really enough to substantiate the ban?
Since the ban was enforced there have there have been some incidents of violence perpetrated by people refusing to obey the smoking regulations. In one incident, a former heavyweight boxer, James Oyebola, was shot in the head after he asked a customer at a nightclub to stop smoking. He later died of his injuries.
Anyone found lighting up illegally could be fined £50 this can be reduced to £30 if it is paid within 15 days.
The figure rises to £200 if an individual is prosecuted and convicted by a court.
Businesses failing to comply with the ban could be hit with fines of up to £2,500 which would add more money to the figures the government receives already from taxes on cigarettes. Although to be fined a violator would need to be caught and visual monitoring of people smoking in pubs and workplace toilets is difficult on a continuous timescale, as a check every hour leaves most of that hour unchecked. The main deterrent against covert smokers taking no notice of the law will be smoke detectors placed strategically on the ceiling of premises, which though many are difficult to fool, others don’t alarm with cigarette smoke possible because it is thinner than smoke from a fire.
As the figures have shown people are smoking less and a very small number have decided to quit altogether but whether this has reduced the number of people dying from passive smoking has yet to be seen as the effects can take years to develop but while doctors, health ministers and the tobacco companies wait for these results will anything change to your night out? Have you already started enjoying the smoke free clubs or do you long for the odour to return and cover up the others. Are you a ‘smirter’ the country is changing and it is very unlikely that a smoking ban will be the last major change of our lifetimes so try to enjoy it whatever your circumstances as the government does not seem willing to listen to the protestors requests and continues trying to make ‘a better world for us all’.

Should the government ban smoking in public places or should it be up to the owner of the place?
Well, places such as government buildings and parks, yes, but I meant a place of business, whether that be a bar or a restaurant.
Nobody’s forcing them to work there.
I believe places that can have children in them, more so yes, but places such as bars & casinos? I definitely believe it should be left up to the owner.
