What are the risks of being pregnant at 40 years old?
My Mom just found out that she is pregnant! I’m very happy! Anyway, she is worried that it is very unsafe for her to carry on with the pregnancy at her age. Especially because she is a smoker. (Not that she would smoke during the pregnancy) She feels she might not be healthy enough though. I believe that she is because she has never had any serious health problems. She’s only three weeks pregnant and she is in complete shock lol. My poor Mom. Any help? No rude comments either please, this is a delicate subject for me and my Mother.
The biggest risk after 35 is that you won’t be able to fall pregnant – obviously not a problem here! Aside from that, the risk of miscarriage and genetic abnormalities goes up after age 35, but the risk of other complications only rises noticably *after* about 40 if the mother is in good health.
So, not wanting to be depressing, but don’t get too used to the idea of a new brother or sister until she makes it past 12 weeks and the genetic tests are all clear. After that, her chance of having a healthy pregnancy and baby is very good. Especially if she gives up smoking! Her doctor will keep a close eye on her for anything going wrong.
One big advantage that she has is you – you will be able to do a lot to help her out as she gets bigger and everything becomes more difficult for her. I’m 37 and pregnant, with a two year old son to look after. It would be so much easier if he was even a few years older! Good luck to you and your Mom.

- Placenta damage-Smoking damages the placenta. Considering that the placenta is what gives nutrients to the fetus, this placenta damage directly effects and causes harm to your developing fetus.
Being an expectant mom I am sure you have already developed a nurturing bond to the child developing inside of you and you wish to protect them and make sure their safety. Stopping smoking is the single most important thing that can be done to help keep your baby secure and make sure they are born healthy.
You can do it with the appropriate help. Don’t attempt to go it alone, your odds of successfully stopping smoking “cold turkey” are very low. You want a quitting smoking method which is created specifically for women that are pregnant. Try to find one that’s all natural. You want to stay away from medication or nicotine replacement therapies (like the patch) as these could be bad for your child. Additionally you have to have one that works quick as time is important. has anyone else quit smoking at the start of their pregnancy but started again towards the end?
Im in my 25th week of my 2nd pregnancy ( lo is 17mth ) and i have just started smoking 1-2 fags a day since going on holiday a week ago! I gave up from the start so i know im really stupid!!! But is there a risk to my baby just having 1-2 a day now seen as i gave up all these weeks??
i read in a pregnancy magazine that it’s WORSE to smoke in your 1st trimester than in any other…so with only 1-2 a day your baby will be very healthy.
i’m the stupid one who has smoked all throughout my pregnancy. it’s a long complicated story. i have tried to quit, but after my grandfather died in october (i was 2 months pregnant) i just lost all willpower to quit…but whatever. it’s no excuse. I’m mad at myself, and i smoke WAAAAY more than 1-2 a day. however, that being said, i am being told i will have a very healthy baby…she’s already very tall and they are estimating she will be 9-10lbs at delivery. i’m due to deliver any day now, even though my due date is may 23rd. 
try not to worry though, girl..i’m sure everything will be fine.
