this question hits home for me. my mom smoked for about 20 years. it was before i was born though-we have 5 kids. anyway. one day i came home and saw my mom smoking and it freaked me out-i saw all the videos about how it can kill you. that was when i was about 12. when i was 15 my mom was diagnosed with stage IV non small cell lung cancer. my mom died three months later.
i know i’m talking more about myself right now but coming from someone who has been through all of that-tell your girlfriend about this. tell her to talk to her mom about it. she needs to get it through to her that it could kill her. it killed my mom and inn 2007, an estimated 213,380 people will be newly diagnosed with lung cancer, and an estimated 160,390 people will die of lung cancer. Lung cancer kills 84% of newly diagnosed patients within five years. The survival rate is 49% for cases detected when the disease is localized to the lung, but only 16% of lung cancers are diagnosed that early.
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States.
Approximately 50% of the people diagnosed with lung cancer have never smoked or are former smokers.
show your girlfriend these facts. stay away from the air. for every hour you are around smoke it’s as if you’ve smoked a cigarette. stay away from things that have carcinogens in them or feed off of it. sugar especially. the best thing she could do for her mom and herself is to get her mom to quit. before she loses her. lung cancer sucks. there’s no easier way to put it. it’s the least “advertised” cancer of all and causes more deaths that most cancers combined

It depends entirely on you genetic make-up, and how it is expressed.
They have shown, that if you are heterozygous with specific alleles of a certain gene on a specific chromosome, you are unlikely to die of cancer caused by smoking. It doesn’t mean you wouldn’t die of cancer caused from other reasons however.
An allele is a different version of a specific gene. For instance, if you have two alleles for brown on the gene that causes eye colour, you will have brown eyes. If you have two alleles for blue on the same gene for eye colour, you will have blue eyes. If you have one brown allele and one blue allele, you will usually have brown eyes, unless you have one or two modifying alleles on another gene, which could cause you to have green or hazel eye colour.
Having this exact combination of alleles for protecting you from getting cancer from smoking, doesn’t mean that your parents or children would be protected, as you only give or get one copy of the gene.
