roommate’s dirty dishes?
Okay, so I have a roommate, a really nice guy, we get along well. We’re both really laid back, and not the cleanest people in the world. But here’s the problem:
He doesn’t own dishes, pots & pans, or utensils, so we both use mine. But he almost never does the dishes, and I find myself having to wash his dishes whenever I want to use my frying pan or anything else. I’ve washed a sinkful of his dishes about a dozen times. I’m not resentful yet, but I’m getting there. The funny thing is, I don’t even care about the dirtiness, I just want to use my dishes, and clean only the dishes I dirtied, not his. These are hours of my life slipping by!
Anyways, my solution is to say (in polite terms) “If you wanna use my dishes, you have to clean them after use. If you want to be able to leave dirty dishes, you’ve gotta get your own.” Does that seem fair? How should I say it? I already have a rule for no smoking in the house or using my computer, so I don’t wanna be “Mr. Authority”. Help!
I totally would. Or print out a list of what you can, and cannot do in the house with both of your input. Don’t even bother doing his dishes. I don’t do my roommate’s, and sometimes, she doesn’t do them for a couple of days, but at least she tells me she left a mess and cleans it up when she says she will.
I use her dishes too. 
But I always clean them.
