Will substance abuse throughout someone’s lifetime effect the health of their children?
I was wondering If a mothers and/or father’s abuse of drugs and/or alcohol throughout their lifetimes can effect the health of their children? (Keeping in mind that the mother would not smoke, drink, or use drugs throughout the actual pregnancy)
Will the parent’s substance abuse induce psychology and emotional problems such as ADHD, depression, Bipolar disorder ect in their children. Will substance abuse effect the quality of the genetic makeup carried in the sperm and eggs somehow?
Advice as well as links and statistics would be useful. Thanks.
If the mother does not use during her pregnancy then the child should be fine physically. Bipolar disorder is genetic so the use of drugs by the parents will have no effect negative or positive on the development of Bipolar.
However…… parents who abuse drugs and alcohol do not make very good parents (parents who PREVIOUSLY used drugs and alcohol are a bit better). Children are neglected and often emotionally or physically abused… this can lead to the development of all sorts of disorders from personality disorders to anxiety disorders…… Bipolar and Schizophrenia are genetic so they will develop independent of home life. Any other mental health issue can be caused by environment.
Addiction is also an inherited trait…… parents can pass a tendancy to be an addict to their children. Doesn’t mean that the children will automatically be addicts but it means that they will be more likely to be addicts than the standard population.

In the interim, quit smoking may also cause short-term after-effects like anxiety, irritability, hunger, tiredness, lack of concentration, weight gain, and insomnia, especially in those smokers who have smoked in high numbers for an extended period of time. However, these changes subside with time and the non-smokers then have the opportunity for a healthier future.
Medical professionals are an excellent source of information about concerned health risks of both smoking and smoking cessation. With adequate guidance and a strong will power any smoker can become a non-smoker in no time.
Reasons for Getting Hooked to Smoking
A state of being dependent on something is addiction and this could be either psychological or physical. Addiction triggers a neurotic or persistent urge to satisfy one’s dependency. This urge, also called cravings or desire, can prompt the onset of addiction. When the first craving is satisfied, other more intense cravings will arise and the cycle continues until you can no longer break the habit.
Nicotine dependency is the most common form of drug addiction for both men and women. Smoking addiction is generally nurtured during adolescence. Peer pressure is all pervasive and that can be hard to resist. In females, smoking may sometimes relieve mood fluctuations that are caused by hormonal changes; it can also temporarily alleviate anger, depression and mood swings by acting on the pleasure centers in the brain.

This alters the chemicals in the brain and conveniently becomes a reason to continue smoking.
If nicotine addiction has to be tackled, it needs to be completely eliminated from the system before a person can become smoke free. The nicotine ‘high’ normally comes from the release of dopamine, which is a “pleasure hormone”.

Cigarette smoke is loaded with a variety of chemicals that can be poisonous to the human body. Tobacco smoke contains over 4,000 chemicals, many of which make smoking harmful and addictive. - Is extremely addictive when smoked and chewed
- Causes addiction as permanent as alcoholism; is harder to quit than heroin or cocaine
- Is not a medicine and has no therapeutic uses
- Prevents pre-cancerous cells from dying; in fact accelerates cancer tumor growth rates
- Contributes to artery hardening
- Has a metabolite which may cause cancer; is linked to lung cancer
- May kill brain cells and impair memory
- Is likely to cause brain damage and depression
- It also has the foetus destroying teratogen
- Kills half of all adult smokers prematurely

How does one get pregnant while using Nuvaring?
I just started using Nuvaring. I have been reading forums with women who are/were on it and a lot of them are either pregnant or know someone who is.
I thought that Nuvaring prevents the egg from releasing as well as increasing the mucus wall. So if this is true, how do women get pregnant while using this form of birth control? They claimed to have followed all of the directions. You can even take it out for 3 hours without it losing effectiveness, so it seems like a pretty fool-proof method of preventing pregnancy.
Is Nuvaring claiming to be something it is not?? Statistics lie, so that 99% effective claim they make seems all smoke in mirrors to me.
The nuva ring works just like birth control pills (or any other method) work – it releases hormones into your body which prevent pregnancy from occurring.
It probably is 99% effective, but there is still that 1% chance of pregnancy.
The reason you read the forums where so many women have gotten pregnant is because the world is a big place.
1% seems small enough, but 1% of 6 billion is 60,000,000.
Also, they may not have taken it properly even though they swear they did.
My friend swore up and down that she never missed a birth control pill and she still got pregnant, but when it was just me and her about 2 years later she finally said “yeah, I missed some”.
I wouldn’t recommend the nuva ring just because my friend was on it and she said she could feel it during sex and it was uncomfortable – even painful – at times.
People still get pregnant while using all types of birth control – the pill, the patch, IUD, implanon, the shot, nuva ring, condoms, pull out (which isn’t really birth control) – it happens sometimes.
